Down Syndrome? More like Up Syndrome
We all know where the name Down Syndrome came from, but in my eyes, there is nothing Down about these kids. In fact it's all Up!!
Take for example this game we play at home. Our portage worker gave us this jigsaw board with a view to improve coordination and develop skills in identifying visual similarities (Kids with Down Syndrome are visual learners after all). Well we play with this jigsaw, and match the dog with the dog, cat with the cat etc. Very quickly after going through this game, my daughter recognised there was a response when making an incorrect match.
It tickled her that when she got it wrong, I would respond "Noooo". Tickled her to the point that everytime we now play, she purposefully puts it in the wrong one. But wait, now she's the one that says "nooooo" when she puts it in the wrong place. The little minx.
Yeah, the doctors never told me that in the hospital did they? Danger of heart problems - Yip, Glue ear - Yip, delayed development milestones - Yip. Sense of humour and winding her father up. Nope they forgot that one!!
